‘H e just had a way of looking at me. I couldn’t lie. I had my story straight. I was going to explain it away by saying I came with a friend, and she’d left with a guy before she’d even had her first drink.’ Grace sat opposite me, trying to explain what had happened to me and herself, it seemed. ‘There was just something about the way he looked at me. It just came out.’

‘Plenty more fish in the sea. Or foxes in the bar.’ Like a lot of things about our new lifestyle, my emotions were pulling me apart in different directions. Most guys would be happy their wife had bluntly refused the advances of another guy in such clear terms, and part of me was too. However, although I’d have liked a break from our extra-martial adventures this evening, I wondered if it was all coming to an end. I trusted my wife, but I wasn’t entirely sure whether it was something about the guy that’d made her tell the truth or something about her.

‘That’s true.’ Grace looked around the bar like a lioness, eyeing her next meal. ‘I wonder how much they’re all worth?’

‘There’s a lot of money in the room.’ They say money and power are aphrodisiacs, which could be seen from checking out the various interactions around the bar. The more I observed, the clearer it was that this wasn’t any ordinary place. All the women were young and beautiful, and they mostly sat along one wall, with a few mingling in the middle or already paired up. ‘I get the feeling this is some kind of high-class brothel.’

‘Speed-dating for sugar daddies?’ Her eyes had their sparkle back as she sucked on her cocktail straw.

‘Older guys ever interest you?’

‘All women go through that phase, I think. One of the girls at Uni had a sugar daddy. She was gorgeous, and he was rich. It was clear to see what they got out of the relationship, and if it worked for them, it worked for them. Who knows where they are now.’

‘Probably traded her in for a younger model.’

‘Maybe. Every relationship is different, I guess. I wonder what people would think about us?’

‘They’d be jealous.’ I squeezed her hand and looked at her as the lights from the bar danced in her eyes.

‘I thought about it.’

‘A sugar daddy?’

‘Being paid.’

‘Oh, that’s a new one.’ I sat up a little and listened intently. I loved how my wife expressed her fantasies so bluntly and how deep her sexual desires ran. All I had to do was hear.

‘There’s something hot about being used. Paid for like a product and letting the guy do anything he wants with you. Also, when I think about it, having someone desire you so much they’re willing to pay for just an hour or so with you. Yeah. I like that a lot.’ Her gaze drifted to the ceiling as her mind went elsewhere. Where exactly would always be a secret to me, kept like many of my wife’s mysteries.
